I left Archdales at 1.10pm and got in the car to make the 25 mile journey north to Oldbury and visit a new ground which is York Road Social club home of AFC Smethwick. I had thought of visiting this ground a couple of weeks back but i got round to it today. I checked all the local fixtures and this was the only game being played in the West Midland Regional Div 1 today.
I got to the ground at 2.50pm and was surprised to find no gate man. I made a headcount of 38. The ground really surprided me, i was very impressed. Thr ground had 2 covered seating areas on 1 side, a long main stand on the other and covered standing area behind one goal.
Smethwick played in the red kit and Wombourne in a kit that reminded me much of the old Wimbledon fc kit years ago. This match as 4th (smethwick) vs 2nd so i expected a decent clash. Wombourne had chance after chance but kept skying the ball on one occasion from around 3 yards.
It got to half time and was 0-0 , but in the 2nd half Smethwick started to wake up but had a shock when they conceded a penalty up stepped the number 4 and skyed it over the bar. AFC Smethwick then shocked the visitors by taking the lead , having a shot parried , the followup was smacked into the bottom corner.
Then a controversial moment , a header from Womborne was headed onto the bar which dropped down on the line and was one of those moments poople want goal line technology brought into the game for and the goal was given to the disbelief of Smethwicks players. Two players then had the early bath when they got sent off for scrapping in the goalmouth bringing each side down to 10 players.
In the 89th minute AFC smethwick took a shock leader firing the ball low and hard beat the keeper and nestled into the net a real smash and grab raid and made sure the points stayed in the black country. I really liked the groundand well worth a visit. My only gripe was a certain group there that absolutely stunk of cannabis but thats nothing to do with the club.
