I know, I know .. its been nearly two weeks since I last posted , I’ve just been really busy at work and have had no energy to go to games hence meaning i haven’t been able to do as many friendlies as I’d hoped but never mind . Today though kicked off the ‘real’ football season .. at least the Midland Combination starting day , so i visited King Georges for Droitwich’s season opener with Last seasons Division 2 Champions Aston.
Aston turned up in an all yellow strip and Spa in the usual red and black. Aston flew out of the blocks and it was only a matter of time before they scored as they did in the 8th minute making a break into the left side of the box before knocking the ball into the far corner.
Aston continued to press and time after time squandered chances and had Spa stalwart Nick West in the Spa goal to thank several times with some smart saves. The sky opened up with a shower near the end of the first half sadly i didn’t have my brolly so I got a bit damp.
In the second half , Spa perked up a bit and made Aston look a much more ordinary side and were level on 60 minutes drilling the ball into the bottom corner. Aston were awarded a penalty soon after Aston’s number 3 , nicknamed “Messi” was adjudged to have been kicked in the face. West dived to his right and palmed the penalty away.
After punching above their weight for much of the game , I’m afraid it was heartbreak for Spa who conceded 30 seconds from the end , poor defending cost them and Aston fired a shot at West who parried the ball to a grateful player who smashed the ball home from 3 yards to send an elated Aston home with 3 points .
In my opinion , Aston did look a good team especially in the opening stages but their attitude did stink at times , especially the ending with a worked up number 10 going ballistic at his own bench and having heated exchanges , apparently after asking him if he wanted to be substituted. Spa also looked decent ,after about 3 years of watching them they look very much the same ,much better defensively than attacking.
