Stourport breezed past a battling Star side in this FA Cup preliminary round replay. The first game had ended 1-1 at Walshes Meadow and so the return leg was played at Dales Lane , the home of Rushall Olympic who Star share with.
I had came to watch this game on Tuesday but found the gates all locked up but according to the Non league paper ,the game was on but to my surprise at 7pm on Wednesday night i clocked the game had been moved to Wednesday so off I raced to Rushall.
I paid the £5 admission , and found the night air was taking a chilly turn and stood on the side facing the dugouts and 2 stands. Star were in their yellow and blue and Swifts in the blue strip. Now Swifts have made a decent start to their season and find themselves in sixth place in the alliance and Star in 12th , although straight from the kick off the gulf of quality between the two was immeasurable , with Swifts flying out of the blocks and stretching Star to their limits wasting a hatful of chances though as time and time again Star allowed Swifts to cross the ball into dangerous areas.
Swifts were ahead on 31 min from a corner , Mark Benbow turned and fired into the corner of the net. Swift’s number 8 Lewis Pountney continued to impress upfront terrorizing Star’s defence .The second half started the same way as the first , with the majority of possession and were 2-0 up on 62 minutes , Paul Jones drilling a ball low into the far corner.
Two minutes later , Pountney got his reward with a goal of his own , Star’s keeper rushing out to the edge of his area to narrow the angle but Pountney simply knocked it past him and it rolled into the net, probably the 2nd best goal I’ve seen this season , after Adam Virgo’s belter at Weston last month.
Star finally woke up and challenged Swifts for the last 15 minutes, getting a consolation on 85 minutes , Reid bending a fine shot into the far side of net from the right side of the box. Swifts progress to the next round and Star will be imagining what could have been .
