Ten man Baggies overcame a physical Southampton side this afternoon at West Bromwich Albion’s training facility. This was part one of my days double and I arrived just before the midday kick off. I entered the ground and passed the immaculate training pitch that is used by the first team squad and found two games on this one and a under 16 game also against Southampton. West Bromwich took to the field in a white kit and Southampton in their traditional red and white strip.
Southampton looked good in the opening stages , testing Albion’s keeper who produced a one handed save. The baggies took the lead on 18 minutes after dispossessing a player in their own half , they sent a exquisite long ball down the field to the edge of the box, the ball was squared for a player who finished from close range. On 26 minutes, West Bromwich were dealt a blow when their gobby number five was shown the red card for bringing down the last man in a clumsy challenge. Southampton exploited the numerical advantage on 25 minutes, with a fierce strike from the edge of the area that flew into the bottom corner.
In the second half , things did go quiet for a time , but came to life when West Bromwich were awarded a penalty , but the penalty was shambolically poor and the keeper saved with ease. Southampton looked good especially the number 8 , the number 2 was good but became poor as time went on. Albion took the lead with a fine solo goal, the number 10 running at goal shaking off challenges from Southampton’s defenders, the keeper rushed out and with a side step found himself in the clear to roll the ball home into a unguarded net. All in this was good entertainment on a blustery Saturday afternoon, but I had to get a move on to the next game of the day.
