A great mornings entertainment was had at Hollyfield Rd this morning as Mickleover fought from the brink to get a draw in this Challenge Bowl competition fixture. The game had just kicked off as I arrived with United in the green strip and Sports in blue. There was a girls football game going on , on the other pitch.
Mickleover took the lead on 11 minutes after a impressive opening ten minutes , after being award a free kick , the ball was parried by Sutton’s keeper but the loose ball was swept in. Mickleover were their own worst enemy though and threw away their lead just three minutes, when Sports keeper threw the ball straight to a United player who lofted the ball into the top corner.
Sutton took the lead in very controversial circumstances on 25 minutes when their player clearly handled the ball before turning and shooting into the roof of the net much to the Derbyshire sides bench. Just before half time to rub the salt further into the wounds , Sutton grabbed a third , the player composing himself ,shaking off a challenge before slotting the ball beyond Sports keeper. Sports trudged off as though the game was behind them.
Half Time – Sutton United… 3 Micklover Sports… 1
Mickleover started the second half rejuvenated and hungry for goals , and were lucky not to score but glanced a header against the post. They scored from the spot though when a player was brought down on the edge of the area, the ball found its way in despite a hand to the ball. I walked to the other side of the pitch , the place reminded me of that film eight legged freaks , I was covered in them flying off the trees and zeroing in on me . Sutton then increased their lead , when the keeper spilled the ball , it was then smashed home.
Mickleover’s long haired substitute I saw at Austrey scored with a real daisy cutter that squirmed under the keeper. Suttons fifth and final goal came when a cross from the left was converted low. It was game on when a fourth brought Sports back from the death , a first attempt was blocked by United’s goalkeepers feet but the rebound was struck into the net. There was still time for a unbelievable equalizer though, in the crowded penalty area and with United desperately trying to hold on , the ball dropped and the ball was struck , finding its way through the crowd into the bottom corner.
Not much has changed since my last visit here 2 years ago , except for some covered shelter behind the goal and some hard standing on the other side to meet league regulations
