This was the main event of the day, the works side who have organised the day against the Wolves Old Stars. I have to say though I hadn’t heard of many of the Wolves side. Darren Simkin,Jody Craddock and Andy Turner being the only ones I knew. Andy Turner was my football coach when I was 16 at a local college, I remember him being slightly better than he was today though as he looked distinctly uninterested. Middlemore took to the field in a red strip and were ahead after 11 minutes through Matty Gutteridge with a great strike into the top corner.
Wolves looked unimpressive in the opening 20 minutes, but equalized through Simon Dunkley , a cross from the right, he back headed the ball but I am not sure if he knew much about it.He limped off shortly afterwards .On 25 minutes Wolves took the lead through John James , who despatched a low shot. Matt Gutteridge grabbed his second to equalize with a shot into the bottom corner. Just before half time , Wolves made it 3-2 with a shot that went in off the bar.
Wolves were in no mood to give up the lead and decided to run riot in the second half. Alex O’Connor half volleying under the keeper from the edge of the box. It was 5-2 , when a player turned and shot, squeezing the ball into the bottom corner. Wolves added a sixth , when a player laid a ball off and the number 2 smashed the ball low. A crushing seventh was added shortly after a rolling ball was played across the box to be finished from close range. Craddock scored from a delightful stooping header. The final goal was scored by Alex O’Connor , who struck the ball into the far corner.
So their you have it , a decent day of goal-whoaring and gets my season officially underway. Well done to both sides for playing out a high quality game. After the game I had a picture taken with Jody Craddock who was only to happy to pose for a photograph. Nice Bloke !
