While on my Devon holiday I took in this cracking clash at Marlborough Park. This ground has featured on my blog before in 2014 but there was no game happening. On entering the ground I found there is an extra covered stand behind the goal. Tonight’s visitors were Braunton.
I can’t say I know alot about Braunton, well nothing at all but they seem a very good and competitive side. Ilfracombe have had a strained history of late dropping out the Western league and now play in the North Devon league, to which I confess I didn’t know existed until last week. Marlborough Park is on the Marlborough Road, a huge hill outside the holiday village and is an ok ground but a little bland but of course you can see the sea from it so it’s all good in my book. There is a small seated stand as you enter and the one behind the goal.
The first half was a great affair , I was impressed with both sides. Ilfracombe battering Braunton but wasting their efforts. Braunton fired an early effort wide before Ilfracombe took the lead on 9 minutes, pulling the ball back from the byline and after the first effort was blocked the bundled in from 4 yards. Ilfracombe also hit the post with a free kick that hit be base of the post and was cleared. Braunton were back in it on 33 minutes , chaegging into the box before laying the ball off for a teammate to tap in.
Three minutes later it was 2-1, Braunton in the yellow , crossing the ball from the left, playing it back in for number 10 to finish at close range. The second half was a quieter affair with Braunton stI’ll on top and they went further in front whend Brauntons impressive number 10 was brought down on the corner of the box, the resulting free kick was met with a diving header by number 10 into the bottom corner. Braunton crushed Ilfracombe with a late goal from s low cross on the right, the ball fell at the feet of an unmarked player who bent a great finish beyond the keeper. All in all cracking entertainment, disappointed with Ilfracombe performance though. Star players were Brauntons 10 and 2.
