My new years eve double header started at a new ground, the midday kick off at The Coppice ground in Shirley for lower table side Highgate against bottom side Brocton. This was a meeting in the Midland Premier League on a very dank and cold day.
The ground is 26 miles from my front door in a very well to do area of Solihull and the car park and social club are outside the ground. The ground boasts a stand that runs right along the one side although only 60% is accessible. Highgate in the red strip took the lead after just 2 minutes, as Ex Worcester City forward Marco Adaggio rounded the keeper and laid the ball off for Macauley Manning to tap in. The Brocton side had a couple of half efforts but never looked much different against a below average Highgate side but Highgate managed to go in at half time ahead in a dour half.
Brocton , looked a rejuvenated side in the second half with their number 7 Sam Bell looking the catalyst. Brocton equalized when Matt Hardiman’s back header plopped into the net. Highgate brought a good save out of Brocton’s keeper before they were finally beaten by a long clearance from the back that came to Bell who side footed the outrushing keeper to send a low shot into the far corner.
