A afternoon trip in the sunny weather culminated in a trip to The Sawmills this afternoon. Myself and Leighavfc got down the M5 easy enough so decided to visit the quays before getting to the ground.
The Sawmills is a nice little set up behind a rather ugly ibis hotel. The ground reminded me a little of Claines lame in width and with the metal railing. Helenic league Longlevens in the red were looking to turn over their Western League opponents. I saw Cribbs in April easily beat Clevedon but the side today didn’t seem to have the quality of April’s.
The game started rather slowly and didn’t spark into life until the 31st minute when Cribbs struck a shot into the top right. Longlevens got back in it after Cribbs made a defensive blunder passing the ball straight to the home side, the player kept composure to slot beyond the keeper.
I must say , Longlevens is the friendliest club i have come across on my travels and that is all down to one person. A man with the initials AB on his top who made conversation with us asking where we were from and asked us to sign the ground hopper register, I spotted Tony Incenzo’s name at the top before giving me a laminated souvenir.
Longlevens equalised straight into the second half, volleying the ball in despite the keeper getting a hand to it. Cribbs scuffed in a low finish before taking the lead, after hitting the bar the ball was eventually fumbled in underneath the diving keeper.
There was still time for late drama as Longlevens rolled in a low strike into the bottom corner. Cribbs were awarded a late and very soft penalty but the keeper was equal to it . Call us morbid but afterwards we made a visit to a part of Gloucesters darker history as we visited Cromwell street home of the famous West Murders there is now a alley way where the house once stood but blimey what a horrible street.
