Ashton put in a dogged performance to seriously frustrate Oldland this afternoon. I spent the day in nearby Clevedon and stopped for a meal at the Little Harp, that opened late due to harmful bugs being found in the local water supply so I stuck to the beer.
Backwell is a mere 7 miles away so headed to a new ground for me, The Lancer Scott Stadium. Good luck trying to park here though as there is a tiny car park used for the ground and the park next door. It is an ok little set up but a little run down. It has a small stand on one side and covered seating in the other that also incorporates the dressing rooms. The club house is long and light with a musty smell.
Before the start of play, Ashton in the marroon strip were 2 from bottom while Oldland were 9th. The first half was a fraught affair with some reckless challenges going in but Ashton were really up for the challenge. Oldland hit the bar with a long range strike before Oldland number 4 flattened Ashton’s number 8 that stopped the game for a while.
The second half was just as hard fought with star man Cordell Young worrying Oldland with his pace and trickery. Tempers boiled over again with Ashton’s Paul Uppingham losing his cool. The game was settled though a cross from the right, the ball landed at to unmarked Tyler James who scuffed the ball into the far corner.
